Topic of my doctoral thesis: Autophagy
Autophagy (from ancient Greek “self-consuming”) refers to the process in cells by which they break down and utilize their own components.
This process is triggered by a limitation of nutrients, among other things. When starving, cells break down parts of their own "inventory" to gain energy and nutrients in order to survive. Cells are selective and prefer to break down cell components that are no longer fully functional. These are later recreated when the nutrient situation improves.
